Most methods of birth control DO NOT PROVIDE PROTECTION against HIV/AIDS or sexually transmitted diseases. Only properly used LATEX condoms and barriers provide protection against HIV/AIDS and STDs.

  Cervical Biopsy

  A cervical biopsy is a gynecology service to remove a sample of the cervix so the tissue can be examined under a microscope. The amount of cervical tissue removed depends on the method used. • A simple cervical biopsy, sometimes called a punch biopsy, removes a small piece of tissue from the surface of the cervix. • An endocervical biopsy (endocervical curettage) removes tissue from high in the cervical canal by scraping with a sharp instrument. • Loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP) uses a thin, low-voltage electrified wire loop to cut out abnormal tissue. • A cone biopsy (conization) is a more extensive form of a cervical biopsy that removes a cone-shaped wedge of tissue from the cervix. It is recommended that woman not have sex or douche 24 to 48 hours before a colposcopy/biopsy. These activities can cause inaccurate results. You may feel some discomfort when the vaginal speculum is inserted. You may feel a pinch and have some cramping if a biopsy sample is taken.

  Pap Smears

  In taking Pap smears, as one of the common ob gyn services a speculum is used to open the vaginal canal and allow the collection of cells from the outer opening of the cervix of the uterus and the endocervix. The cells are examined under a microscope to look for abnormalities. The test aims to detect potentially pre-cancerous changes (called cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) or cervical dysplasia), which are usually caused by sexually transmitted human papillomaviruses. The test remains an effective, widely used method for early detection of pre-cancer and cervical cancer. The test may also detect infections and abnormalities in the endocervix and endometrium.

  Hymenotomy

  A hymenotomy is a minor gynecology surgical procedure that involves removing part or all of a woman’s hymen. There are many reasons a woman might need a hymenotomy, most of them having to do with the malformation of the hymen. Some women have this surgery to increase comfort during intercourse, while others need it for health reasons. In many cases, the hymen is simply removed, though some of it may be left in place for personal or religious reasons. A woman receiving a hymenotomy usually has a fairly fast recovery time, barring any infection or surgical complications. The hymen is a superficial web of tissue located across a portion of the female vaginal opening. Most of the time, the uncovered part of this opening is sufficient to allow for regular menstrual flow or the use of tampons. Traditionally, it is thought to be a representation of virginity, broken the first time a young woman has sexual intercourse. The hymen may also be stretched or broken in other ways, however, such as the first time a young woman uses a tampon, during athletic exercise, or during masturbation.

  Endometrial Ablation

This procedure has been proven to help control heavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia) without any need of hormones or a hysterectomy.

  Colposcopy

  Your gynecologist may order a colposcopy if your cervix appears abnormal during your pelvic exam and Pap smear, or if you have a history of prenatal DES exposure. Colposcopy is a simple, 10- to 15-minute professional gyn procedure that is painless and performed in a gynecologist’s office. You are positioned on the examination table like you are for a Pap smear, and an acetic acid (such as common table vinegar) is placed on the cervix. Your physician will use a colposcope — a large, electric microscope that is positioned approximately 30 cm from the vagina — to view your cervix. A bright light on the end of the colposcope lets the gynecologist clearly see the cervix. During the initial evaluation, a medical history is obtained, including gravidity (number of prior pregnancies), parity (number of prior deliveries), last menstrual period, contraception use, prior abnormal pap smear results, allergies, significant past medical history, other medications, prior cervical procedures, and smoking history. In some cases, a pregnancy test may be performed before the procedure. The procedure is fully described to the patient, questions are asked and answered, and the patient then signs a consent form.

  Hysterosonogram

  Women who suspect they may have polyps, fibroids or who have experienced recurrent pregnancy loss when they are trying to conceive are likely to undergo a hysterosonogram. Also known as a sonohysterogram, this diagnostic test is similar to a hysterosalpinogram but involves the use of an ultrasound to get a more detailed picture of the reproductive organs.

  Cryosurgery

  Cervical cryosurgery or cryotherapy is a gynecological treatment that freezes a section of the cervix. Cryosurgery of the cervix is most often done to destroy abnormal cervical cells that show changes that may lead to cancer. These changes are called precancerous cells. Your gynecologist will probably use the term cervical dysplasia. Cryosurgery is done only after a colposcopy confirms the presence of abnormal cervical cells. Cyrotherapy is also used for the treatment of cervicitis or inflammation of the cervix. Cryosurgery is not a treatment for cervical cancer.

  Gardasil

  GARDASIL is the only human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine that helps protect against 4 types of HPV. In girls and young women ages 9 to 26, GARDASIL helps protect against 2 types of HPV that cause about 75% of cervical cancer cases, and 2 more types that cause 90% of genital warts cases. In boys and young men ages 9 to 26, GARDASIL helps protect against 90% of genital warts cases. GARDASIL, as a part of our gyn services also helps protect girls and young women ages 9 to 26 against 70% of vaginal cancer cases and up to 50% of vulvar cancer cases. GARDASIL may not fully protect everyone, nor will it protect against diseases caused by other HPV types or against diseases not caused by HPV. GARDASIL does not prevent all types of cervical cancer, so it’s important for women to continue routine cervical cancer screenings. GARDASIL does not treat cancer or genital warts. GARDASIL is given as 3 injections over 6 months.

  Pelvic Floor Reconstruction

  Pelvic floor reconstructive surgery is one of the women’s health services consists of several procedures for correcting a condition called “pelvic organ prolapse.” When the muscles of the pelvic floor are damaged or become weak – often due to childbirth – they are sometimes unable to support the weight of some or all of the pelvic and abdominal organs. If this occurs, one or more of the organs may drop (prolapse) below their normal positions, causing symptoms including discomfort, pain, pressure and urinary incontinence. The goal of pelvic floor reconstruction is to restore the normal structure and function of the female pelvic organs. About 35 percent of women will develop some form of pelvic organ prolapse. The condition can often be treated with nonsurgical therapies, but it sometimes requires pelvic floor reconstructive surgery. The expertise and skill of the physician is extremely important in these procedures.
