Compared to a conventional prosthesis, dental implant supported teeth Function, look and feel like natural teeth. Allow you to speak, smile and eat with confidence. They are comfortable and stay in place unlike removable denture .Dental Implants Do not need other teeth for support and do not require “cutting down” or preparation of other teeth. When a single tooth is missing, the two most common treatment options are the traditional tooth supported bridge, when a traditional bridge is used to replace a missing tooth, the adjacent teeth are cut down to pegs in order to fit the cemented bridge in place. This method of tooth replacement can be very esthetic and functional for a period of time. However, a tooth supported bridge does not help maintain the bone that surrounds the root. Since there is no longer a root to hold the bone in place, the bone deteriorates, or melts away. When missing a single tooth, the gold standard for replacing it is with a Single Dental Implant, the advantage of a dental implant over other dental restorations are: It looks, feels and functions like a natural tooth. A dental Implant is much more esthetic. Dental implants are better long term, It does not get decay. There is no need to grind down the adjacent natural teeth. There is little or no bone loss and prevents a visible bony defect. It is easier to clean than other tooth supported bridges. Replacing Multiple Missing Teeth When more than one tooth is missing, there are three common treatment options: 1) The traditional tooth supported dental bridge 2) An uncomfortable removable partial denture or 3) A dental implant supported bridge. In this situation the benefits of dental implant supported teeth are even more obvious. A removable prosthesis, such as a partial denture, actually accelerates the bone melting process, resulting in more rapid bone deterioration. In addition, the clasps which hold the partial denture in place put extreme pressure on the natural teeth they hook onto, loosening them and in many cases, eventually leading to the loss of those teeth. Most patients with partial dentures state that they are uncomfortable and that they rarely wear them. The advantages of replacing multiple missing teeth with dental implant supported bridges include the following: They look feel and function like natural teeth. They are much more comfortable and stable than partial dentures. Natural biting and chewing ability is restored. They virtually stop the bone resorption process (deterioration). Facial esthetics are maintained with a youthful appearance. Adjacent natural teeth are not compromised (ground down to stumps or loosened). Missing All The Teeth Full Mouth Dental Implants In the past, people missing all of their teeth had no option but dentures. A Denture has numerous disadvantages, such as: Dentures are uncomfortable and often painful Dentures do not look natural, especially when eating As the bone continues to melt away, the dentures become loose, and can fall out when laughing, sneezing, or coughing without the use of adhesives People without their teeth and supporting bone visibly age much faster Wearing dentures usually undermines a person’s self confidence (they have missing body parts and do not feel complete or natural) People with dentures cannot eat certain foods, such as steak, corn on the cob and apples People with dentures generally have bad breath These problems can be solved with dental implant supported replacement teeth, which are stable (securely fastened to the implants) and maintain the integrity of the facial structures by preserving the bone. Some of the many advantages of dental implant supported teeth include the following: They are more comfortable and stable than traditional dentures They virtually sto

Dental implant bridges replace missing teeth by “bridging” the gap using two or more dental implants. When a dentist must use two or more dental implants to replace missing teeth that would otherwise need to be shaved down two or more teeth to replace those missing teeth. With proper oral hygiene, bridges can last several years. However, improper or infrequent brushing, flossing, and irregular dental visits, will bring the bridge to an untimely failure. Implant Bridges have become the gold standard when missing multiple teeth, especially when there are no remaining back teeth. The only other option for tooth replacement in the case when missing all of your back teeth would be a Removable Partial Denture, which is significantly more uncomfortable then dental Implant Supported Bridge. Two or more Dental Implants are placed adjacent to one another after the Implants Osseointegrate an impression is taken of the implants and a bridge is fabricated by the dental lab. Once the Implant supported dental bridge is in place it will function like your own teeth restoring your ability to chew and enjoy food. Cost Of Dental Implant Bridge A Implant Bridge requires a least two dental implant to be placed, price range from $1100 to $3000 each one may ask why are dental implants so expensive, a patient has to keep in mind they are buying a service preformed by a skilled professional that they trust, and not a dental implant. A dental implant bridge consist of at least a crown that fits over one implant and then a pontic “fake tooth” in between another implant crown which then be cemented over an implant abutment or came be screwed in directly into the implant . The cost can range from $4000 to $20,000 depending how on many teeth are being replaced. Get a dental implant quote from our Implant Dentist. A single tooth implant is an ideal long term solution when you have your adjacent teeth because the implant crown is not connected to any other teeth. The dental implant is placed between two natural teeth and is allowed to osseointegrate for 3-6 months depending on the dental implant site. Sometimes a bone grafting procedure is needed to help place the implant in the optimal position. There Are Several Types Of Single Tooth Dental Implant Procedures: Extraction And Bone Graft With Delayed Dental Implant Placement. This is a case when there is an unrestorable tooth that needs to be removed and there is not enough bone to hold the dental implant in place. Bone material is placed to hold the space so the bone does not collapse and create a bigger problem in the future. The dental implant is placed 3-6 months later. Extraction With Immediate Dental Implant Placement. This is possible when an unfixable tooth is removed and there is enough bone to hold the dental implant. The dental implant is placed the same day after the tooth is extracted. In some instances bone graft material may need to be placed to fill in the space around the implant and in 3-6 month the implant crown and abutment may be placed. Missing Tooth That Was Removed Month Or Years Ago. This type of situation can either be simple or complicated depending on how the tooth was removed, how long ago the tooth was removed and if a bone graft was used at the time of the extraction. If a bone graft is needed, then, we have delayed dental implant placement; if no bone graft is needed then we can place the dental implant the same day. The Advantages Over Other Tooth Replacements Are: No need to grind down adjacent teeth. You don’t have to remove it. You floss and clean it like your natural teeth. It looks and feel like your natural teeth. It is a quick and relatively painless procedure.

What Are Cosmetic Crowns? A cosmetic crown is a restoration that covers, or “caps,” a tooth to restore it to its normal shape and size, strengthening and improving the appearance of a tooth. Crowns are necessary when a tooth is generally broken down and a filling or an inlay won’t solve the problem. If a tooth is cracked a crown holds the tooth together to seal the cracks so the damage doesn’t get worse. Crowns are also used to support a large filling when there isn’t enough of the tooth remaining, attach a bridge, protect weak teeth from fracturing, restore fractured teeth, or cover badly shaped or discolored teeth. What Are Cosmetic Crowns Made Of? There are two types of Cosmetic crowns however there are many different types of crowns but they all can be divided into one of three categories based upon the materials used. Crowns can be all metal , all ceramic/porcelain , or porcelain fused to metal . Porcelain No Metal is made with EMAX ceramic/porcelain crown. These crowns have no metal and depending upon the type of crown is bonded to the tooth. This type of crown is more esthetic because it is bonded to the tooth, has greater depth of color and is opalescent. Porcelain veneers are very similar in character to a porcelain crown. Zirconia Zirconia Crowns are white and don’t show any metal around the gums. These crowns are great for back teeth because they are strong and can resist normal wear and tear like PFM crowns How Is A Crown Placed? To prepare the tooth for a crown, it is reduced so the crown can fit over it. An impression of the teeth and gums are made and sent off to the lab for the crown fabrication. A temporary crown is fitted over the tooth until the permanent crown in made. On the next visit, the dentist removes the temporary crown and cements the permanent crown onto the tooth. Will It Look Natural? Yes. The dentist’s main goal is to create crowns that look like natural teeth. That is why dentists take an impression. To achieve a certain look, a number of factors are considered, such as the color, bite, shape and length of your natural teeth. Any one of these factors alone can affect your appearance. If you have a certain cosmetic look in mind for your crown, discuss it with your dentist at your initial visit. When the procedure is complete, your teeth will not only be stronger, but they may be more attractive. Why Crowns And Not Veneers? Crowns require more tooth structure removal; hence, they cover more of the tooth than veneers. Crowns are stationary and are customarily indicated for teeth that have sustained significant loss of structure, or to replace missing teeth. Crowns may be placed on natural teeth or dental implants. How Should I Take Care Of My Crowns? To prevent damaging or fracturing the crowns, avoid chewing hard foods, ice or other hard objects. You also want to avoid teeth grinding. Besides visiting your dentist and brushing twice a day, cleaning between your teeth is vital with crowns. Floss or interdental cleaners (specially shaped brushes and sticks) are important tools to remove plaque from the crown area where the gum meets the tooth. Plaque in that area can cause dental decay and gum disease. Have more than one consultation, if necessary, to feel comfortable that our dentist understands your objectives. Preparation Of Teeth This appointment will take from one to two hours. To prepare the teeth for the porcelain veneers, the teeth are lightly buffed to allow for the small added thickness of the veneer. Usually, about a half a millimeter of the tooth is removed, which may require a local anesthetic. At this appointment, a mold is taken of the teeth, which is sent to the laboratory for the fabrication of the veneers. This can take about one to two weeks. If the teeth are too unsightly a temporary veneer can be placed, at an additional cost. Bonding Of Veneers This appointment will take about one or two hours. 1st The dentist places the veneers with water on the teeth to check their fit and color. While the veneers are resting on your teeth, view the esthetic results, and pay particular attention to the color. The color of the veneers can still be adjusted with the shade of the cement.

What Are Cosmetic Dental Fillings? Cosmetic Dental fillings are used to fill holes (cavities) that have formed, usually as a result of decay or tooth wear. There are many types of dental filling, each suitable for different cavities. Tooth-colored dental fillings can now be used instead of amalgam (silver) dental fillings, making them a natural-looking alternative. They are often used in teeth that show during smiling or talking. Most people have a local anesthetic injection to completely numb the area while the dental filling is being done. The decayed and weakened parts of the teeth are removed using small drills and the hole is washed. The filling material is then packed in. Tooth-colored dental fillings must be kept completely dry until they have set, so the dentist will take special precautions to keep saliva away from the area. Tooth Colored, Bonded Dental Fillings Have The Following Advantages: Because the dental fillings are adhesive in nature, less tooth structure has to be removed than with silver dental fillings. A tight seal is created between the dental filling, the tooth and the nerve, which cannot be accomplished with conventional silver dental fillings. They look great! In the event of future problems, these dental fillings can be added to or repaired while silver dental fillings need to be replaced entirely How Long Do They Last? Tooth colored dental fillings now are harder and more durable than silver / amalgam dental fillings. A small dental filling could conceivably last your lifetime, and larger dental fillings can be expected to last many years. The factors that determine the lifespan of a particular dental filling include: the tooth (molars take more force than bicuspids), the size of the dental filling relative to the tooth (smaller dental fillings will usually be more durable than larger dental fillings), and how teeth are cleaned and maintained daily.

Why Do I Have Dark Gums Or Dark Spots On My Gums? Dark gums are caused by an excess of melanin in the gums, which make them look brown or black instead of pink, depending on the amount of melanin build up. Fortunately, in most cases it is not a disease but a variation of the normal gum structure. However, if you feel that the dark gums are not cosmetically appealing there is a solution that will give you the pink gums you desire. Dr. Alexander Lezhansky DDS at Bright Smile Design Dental can use a laser in order to remove the excess melanin lightening the dark gum and creating a pink gum. This procedure is called Laser Gum Bleaching. How Do I Get My Dark Gums Whitened? Call Bright Smile Design Dental to set up a free consultation for Laser Gum Bleaching; we have 2 conveniently located dental offices in Brooklyn and Manhattan to accommodate your busy schedule. During your Laser Gum Bleaching consult Dr. Alexander Lezhansky DDS will evaluate your dark gums to make sure that the dark spots are not caused by gum disease. After a thorough exam of your gums Dr. Lezhansky will make his recommendation. What Is Laser Gum Bleaching? Laser Gum Bleaching is a cosmetic dental procedure performed by a dentist using a special laser that removes the top thin layer of gum tissue that contains the dark color. Dental numbing medicine is used to make the procedure virtually painless. After the procedure, usually there is minimal discomfort which can be controlled by using over the counter pain medication. Since our dentist is using a special laser technology there is usually no bleeding or swelling after the Laser Gum Bleaching. After the procedure, a special rinse will be prescribed in order to help keep the gums clean. The Laser Gum Whitening usually takes 45 minutes per arch, meaning that the top gum whitening would take approximately 45 minutes. If you want the top and bottom gums whitened, then it would take approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes or two appointments 45 minutes each. Sometimes, the dark gums have very deep discoloration and Dr. Lezhansky will have the patient return for a touchup within a month of the treatment in order to do a touch up of the area. What Is Gummy Smile Reduction? Each person’s smile is different. Some people show more gum (pink) when they smile while there is nothing wrong with showing more gum biologically. However some feel that is aesthetically undesirable. At Bright Smile Design Dental we evaluate the amount of gum tissue (pink) showing compared to the your teeth and explain your option on how to reduce the amount of gum tissue showing using several techniques using a laser, as well as in conjunction with cosmetic dentistry to handcraft your smile design. What Are The Steps Involved With Getting A Gummy Smile Reduction? The first visit would be a consultation where X-rays pictures, and measurements would be taken in order to evaluate the options available to correct the gummy smile. This could involve laser gum recontouring, upper lip laser repositioning, cosmetic dentistry or a combination of procedures at Bright Smile Design Dental we perform all aspects of the procedure so we can tailor the needed treatment plan and preform all in one place. Once the handcrafted treatment plan is decided on we will take molds of the mouth and design a special guide and prepare any temporary teeth needed and setup the appointment to get the procedure done. On the day of the gummy smile reduction procedure we will use local anesthesia in order to numb the area, so you will not feel anything. Usually recovery time is a couple of days and the follow up appointment is in two weeks. On the follow up appointment we will make a final decision on whether or not any cosmetic dentistry is needed and then schedule an appointment for any cosmetic procedure needed. Most of the time if there are not any discolored, or misshapen teeth only the gum smile reduction procedure is needed. Botox Treatment For Gummy Smile. Botox is the least invasive treatment used to treat gummy smile, however temporary it is the first treatment that can be used if you are not ready for a bigger commitment of a surgery. This is also the least expensive treatment for gummy smile however to maintain the results the Botox will need to be repeated..This Treatment is perfect if you have a special event coming up and want to have a more aesthetically pleasing smile for pictures. It is best to schedule the appointment for Botox treatment at least 10 days before any event to get the maximum effect.

Dental bridges replace missing teeth by “bridging” the gap between two remaining teeth. There are different types of bridges to choose from. Traditional bridges: also called fixed bridges the dentist creates a pontic, or false, tooth with a dental crown on either side. The crowns are fitted over the remaining teeth to hold the false tooth in place. Resin bonded bridges: the pontic tooth is fused to a metal band. The metal band, in turn, is bonded to the back of the remaining teeth with white resin cement. Cantilever bridge: dentists recommend this bridge when there are only teeth on one side of the gap. While traditional bridges have a crown on either side of the pontic, cantilever bridges consist of two side-by-side crowns and only one is connected to the pontic. Inlay Bridge: this is a more conservative type of bridge instead of crowning the teeth you prepare the teeth conservatively for inlays. The pontic is attached to inlay preparations on either side. Dental Bridges Diagram To design a bridge, a dentist must reshape the teeth to make room for the crowns and then make a mold of the teeth. This mold is then sent off to a laboratory, where the actual crowns and bridge are made. With proper oral hygiene, bridges can last up to ten years. However, improper or infrequent brushing and flossing, irregular dental visits, and excessive sugar and starch intake can all bring untimely damage to the bridge.

What Is A Dental Extraction? A dental extraction is when you have a tooth removed or pulled; this is one of the most requested services by people who come to our NYC dental office in pain, however this should be the last resort treatment. Once the tooth is removed you will have a space where the tooth once was and is recommended to be replaced otherwise it can affect the surrounding teeth and cause more problems. Why Do I Need A Dental Extraction? Usually due to pain, this pain is caused by a cavity (hole) that has penetrated your enamel and has reached the pulp chamber of the tooth which contains blood vessel and nerve tissue. An extraction is done when no other option exists: Tooth is beyond repair, broken below the gum line or the tooth fractured. At Bright Smile Design Dental we believe that if all possible saving the tooth is your best option this can be done by performing a dental root canal treatment. Post core and a dental crown when possible. If the tooth needs to be extracted a bone graft is the optimal treatment at the time of dental extraction. A bone graft help to prevent further damage to the adjacent teeth, because after a dental extraction hole is left for your body to fill in with bone. Your body usually fills in less bone then there was before and the teeth next to the site will loss bone as well unless a socket bone graft is performed. Why Do I Need To Replace An Extracted Tooth? After a tooth is extracted bone will try to fill in the hole where the tooth once was and usually with less bone then before, hence we recommend a bone graft in other to preserve the bone. Teeth a constantly moving into an area of less resistance (the extraction site) the opposing teeth will move in the space as well as the adjacent teeth. This movement of the teeth will cause a bad bite, tooth sensitivity, root exposure, and sore gums. A Bright Smile Design Dental we recommend the gold standard in replacing teeth which is a dental implant. Even though most dental extractions proceed without any complications, some can occur. The most likely problems include pain, bleeding, infection, swelling, broken root tips, and bone chips and fragments. Most people who have had a tooth extracted know that a certain degree of pain and bleeding is normal. Pain that lasts for up to a week or so but is gradually improving and bleeding that continues for up to 12-24 hours but is slowing down should be considered typical and will most likely not require follow-up care. Pain that seems to be getting worse after two days should be considered abnormal and may require evaluation by the dentist. Pain that increases after a dental extraction might be due to a dry socket, usually treated by the dentist rinsing the socket with an antiseptic mouth rinse, packing the area with a medicated dressing and putting the patient on pain medication. Another problem is bleeding that lasts for more than twenty four hours or is increasing several hours after the extraction. This may point to a serious problem that requires prompt attention from the dentist. Prolonged bleeding may occur if there is damage to a blood vessel or other tissue during an extraction, if a patient is taking certain medications or has a predisposing medical condition. Excessive bleeding can also be caused by a patient rinsing, spitting, or smoking after a dental extraction. To stop the bleeding, a dentist can pack and stitch the socket closed. An infection and swelling are also potential complications from a dental extraction. An infection can be caused if debris or bacteria gets into the socket. Swelling is usually due to the trauma of having the tooth extracted, or can occur from a spreading infection. Swelling can be reduced by salt water rinses (after 24 hours) and an ice compress. Infections and swelling are usually treated by the dentist with rinsing the socket, antibiotics, and in some cases draining the infection surgically. Broken root tips, bone chips and fragments are fairly common complications following a dental extraction. A small uninfected root tip can sometimes be left inside the jaw after a dental extraction if its removal might be too difficult or cause too much trauma for the patient. Often root tips, bone chips and fragments will work their way out on their own, but may also need some help from the dentist to remove them completely. An infected root tip stuck in the jaw bone will require surgical removal. Problems with dental extractions are fairly common, but can be minimized and resolved by a dentist experienced in oral surgery.

Why Do I Need Tooth Sealants? Teeth begin to develop in infancy and continue to develop into teenage years. The architecture of a tooth contain “hills” and “valleys” the valleys of the teeth don’t fully seal until your later teenage years. During this time all the food that can cause cavities is in contact with the weaker tooth structure of unsealed valleys, during this time the tooth is more likely to get a cavity. This is why sealants are recommended at the time the 1st molars erupt in order to protect the tooth from getting unwanted cavities. What Is A Dental Sealant? Dental sealants act as a barrier, protecting the teeth against decay-causing bacteria. The sealants are usually applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth (premolars and molars) where decay occurs most often. A sealant is just like a composite filling that is more flowable which is able to flow into valleys of the tooth.

Getting regular dental check ups every six months is important because between 74-85% of Americans suffer some degree of gum disease but less than half are aware of it. Gums disease affects the whole body and not just your mouth. What Is Gingivitis ? Gingivitis is a mild case of gum disease and is reversible if treated in time. Brushing and flossing daily will help keep plaque levels in check. The most important part of the fight against gum disease is your Biannual dental cleaning, this is when the dentist or hygienist can remove the stubborn supra gingival plaque. In most patient plaque tends to build up around the lower front teeth and the upper far back teeth these, areas should be focused on in your daily oral health routine. What Is Periodontitis ? Periodontitis is an advance case of gingivitis when you started to loss the underlying tissue that supports the tooth such as bone, ligaments and the attachment between your teeth and gums. There are several severities of periodontitis moderate, advanced and severe periodontitis. Moderate Periodontitis: Is when the inflammation has caused bone loss due to disease of the gums which is caused by bacteria and pockets depth range from 4-5mm can be accompanied by bleeding when brushing or flossing. Advanced Periodontitis: Is when the inflammation of the gum has caused more destruction of your bone with some tooth mobility and probing depths 6-9mm will be accompanied with bleeding of the gums. Severe Periodontitis: This is the most advanced case of gum disease when the teeth are movable with your tongue or finger, sometimes pus around the teeth, with pockets ranging from 9mm and higher. How To Treat Gingivitis And Periodontitis? If the dental exam reveals that you have gingivitis or moderate periodontitis, at Bright Smile Design Dental there are several non-surgical techniques. Antibiotics both topical and oral : Arestin is applied and the gums can heal, tightening around the teeth. Dental Cleaning: Cleans the staining and above the gum build up of plaque and calculus. What Is Root Canal Therapy? Root canal therapy is designed to remove infected dental pulp — the soft tissue inside tooth that contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. Teeth that are abscessed, or infected can receive a root canal in order to keep the tooth in the mouth, instead of extracting (pulling)the tooth, in 95 percent of these cases of pulpal infection, the natural tooth can be saved through modern endodontic (root canal) procedures. What Causes Pulpal Nerve Damage? The most common causes of pulpal nerve damage are: Cavities:Generally brought on by aggressive tooth decay (cavity) reaching down to the nerve or under a deep fillings, which destroy your natural defense of enamel and allow bacteria to reach the nerve resulting in infection and decay. Trauma: A blow to a tooth or the jaw can cause damage to sensitive nerve tissue within the tooth. Root Canal Therapy Diagram What Are The Symptoms Of Pulpal Nerve Damage? The Following Are The Most Common Symptoms Of Pulpal Nerve Damage. Pain in the tooth when biting down tooth Pain while chewing Oversensitivity of the teeth with hot and cold drinks Facial swelling Spontaneous pain during the night The symptoms of pulpal nerve damage may resemble other oral health conditions. However, each individual may experience symptoms differently so please consult a dentist for a diagnosis. Why Is Root Canal Therapy Necessary? Without treatment, the infection of the dental pulp will spread to the bone around the tooth which in turn will cause pain and swelling, if the infection continues to spread the bone may no longer be able to hold the tooth in place, and will then need to extract the tooth. If the infection of the tooth is not addressed it may spread to other parts of the head and may cause severe health problems. What Does The Root Canal Procedure Involve? Treatment begins with the removal of the tooth decay to allow access to the pulpal tissue which is the source of pain and infection. The area surrounding and containing the pulpal tissue is carefully cleaned, enlarged, and shaped to provide a clean area. After filling the canal where the pulpal tissue was, a crown is fabricated to complete the rescue and restoration of the natural tooth. Sometimes the procedure is spread over several visits to assure the infected pulp and associated bacteria have been adequately drained. Post-Operative Care Following A Root Canal Once the root canal therapy is completed, there will be changes to adapt to, including: brittleness – a pulp-less tooth is more brittle than a non-treated tooth and great care should be used to avoid fracture chipping and discoloration. In addition chewing on that tooth may cause discomfort due to the ligaments being inflamed and may be a source of irritation in the weeks following surgery. Consult your dentist, or other oral health specialist, for a treatment approach to help control any post-operative swelling and discomfort.

Do You Live With One Of The 80 Million People In North America Who Snore While Sleeping? Are You The One Who Makes It Difficult For Others To Get A Good Night’s Rest? If so, we may be able to help, with a recently developed device called the SILENT NITE TM appliance. During sleep, the muscles and soft tissue in the throat and mouth relax, making the breathing airway smaller. This decrease in the airway space increases the velocity of air flowing through the airway during breathing. As the velocity of required air is increased in the constricted space, soft tissues like the soft palate and the uvula vibrate, which causes snoring.Anti-snoring Device – Sleep Apnea Snoring research has shown that custom fabricated dental devices worn at night that move the lower jaw into a forward position, increase the three dimensional space in the airway tube, which reduces air velocity and soft tissue vibration. In this way, snoring can be eliminated. The success rate of such devices ranges from 70-100%. The SILENT NITE TM appliance is the most comfortable of the appliances we have found. It positions the lower jaw into a forward position by means of special connectors that are attached to transparent flexible upper and lower forms. The forms are custom laminated with heat and pressure to the dentist’s model of the mouth. The fit is excellent and comfortable. Although many patients have been successfully treated with the SILENT NITE TM appliance, certain types of problems are not amenable to appliance therapy. In order to help determine whether or not this appliance will help you, we have a simple take-home checklist that you can fill out. Your answers will enable us to make a recommendation of what type of treatment would help you the most, so that you and your loved ones can enjoy more peaceful and healthful sleep. TMJ Facial Pain & Migraines Treatment Manhattan | Brooklyn Self Help Remedies Many self-help remedies have been suggested to treat TMD symptoms, but be aware that these remedies do not treat the cause. In fact, TMD treatment through the right dentist may be less costly, less time intensive and produce a fully satisfactory result. Although the following self-help remedies do not treat TMD long term, temporary relief may be found. Heat and Cold Packs:Heat and cold packs applied to the side of the face and temple for 10-minute intervals may reduce the intensity of the pain affecting the muscles and surrounding area of the jaw. Limit Jaw Movement:It is important to avoid large movement of the jaw, such as singing and wide yawning. Also, do not apply pressure with your hand against your jaw for an extended time period, such as when sleeping. Limit the pressure you apply with a phone receiver. Diet:Choose soft food and stay away from foods requiring repetitive chewing or the mouth to be open wide. In particular, avoid chewing gum, taffy, pretzels and raw carrots. Dental Treatment:Continue to receive dental treatment for any teeth requiring restoration. Tooth decay may affect the bite, a contributing factor to TMD. Physical Therapy, Biofeedback, and Massage:In some cases, physical therapy, biofeedback and massage provide temporary relief from TMD. Medications:Some doctors or dentists may prescribe non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs like ibuprofen), muscle relaxants, anti-anxiety medications and in some cases anti-depressants. The choice of medication depends on the intensity of the disorder and your medical history. However, the need for medication is greatly reduced when treatment is received from an experienced TMD dental professional. Do I Need Surgery For My TMJ? If your dentist suspects a structural disorder within the joint itself, further studies may be necessary prior to treatment to ensure that a proper diagnosis is made. A good screening tool is the panoramic X-ray, but other diagnostic tests also may be required. In other cases, an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) may be used to help your dentist view the soft tissue area surrounding the disc joint.
